Storm Water Management

Detention Pond

Land development replaces open space with buildings, parking lots and roads.  These impervious surfaces reduce the area available for infiltration and increase the potential for downstream flooding.  Storm water management is a high priority for local communities particularly in urban/suburban areas.

In the United States, regulations require Best Mangement Practices (BMPs) in the design of storm water management system (http://cfpub.epa.gov/npdes/home.cfm?program_id=6).  In Europe, Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) regulations set the standard for the management and discharge of surface and drainage waters (www.ciria.org/suds/index.html).

A surface pond is the most common  storm water retention/detention system used to capture and control the increase in peak runoff for a storm event.
